Most, if not all, black sand beaches come to be because of volcanic ash finding its way to the shoreline. And given that Iceland is home to over 30 active volcanoes, their black sand beaches should come as no surprise.
Being so far from the capital, the beach is almost never crowded and will make it feel like your own little island. Apart from the mountains or the black sand, the area is a prime spot to see the elusive Northern Lights during winter.
The land of fire and ice has black sand beaches aplenty in addition to the renowned Reynisfjara beach in Iceland. This includes Diamond beach, Djupalonssandur, and Stokksnes beach. Each beach has a unique draw that attracts visitors every year.
In addition to the beaches, enjoy scenic waterfalls, magnificent glaciers, glorious views, and the chance of seeing the Northern Lights. That sounds really interesting, right Read some more interesting facts about Iceland that will blow your mind.
For photographers, this is one of the top spots to visit in Iceland. Capturing Vestrahorn with the ripples of sand on the beach, the bumpy sand dunes covered in grasses, and the beach at high tide, all make stunning photography material.
This stunning beach is located on the south coast of Iceland and takes up to 2,5 hours drive from Reykjavik, but making several pit stops on the way, makes it truly worth it. As mentioned earlier, Reynisfjara beach is located in close proximity to Vík, or about 10 minutes drive. On the way to Reynisfjara, you could also stop at Dyrhólaey cliff, located on the same coastline, which is known for rich birdlife.
As mentioned earlier, Sólheimasandur is located in close proximity from Reynisfjara (about 20 minutes drive) and Skógafoss Waterfall (about 10 minutes drive) on the south coastline of Iceland. Years ago it was possible to drive all the way up to the Sólheimasandur plane wreck, however, today you must hike from the Ring Road about 3.25 km each way or about 6.5 km in total. Or if you want to safe time and are looking for more adventure you could go on a ATV tour to the plane wreck.
This impressive cliff formation is not only renowned for its black sand beach but this 120 metre promenade offers some stunning panoramic views, of the south coast including Reynisfjara and Sólheimasandur. Dyrhólaey, was formed by volcanic activity and literally means Door Hill Island. Originally, Dyrhólaey was an island, before becoming part of the mainland. It is also home to many species of birds, including the adorable Atlantic Puffins which can be spotted from May to September and Eider duck which can be found year round. Please note, during nesting time this location is closed off for public to protect the wildlife. If you want you could also go on a Puffin tour from the old harbor in Reykjavik. Dyrhólaey is part of the popular south shore route with many pit stops along the way, including the falls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, Reynisfjara Beach and Vík.
Unlike Asbyrgi Canyon, Diamond Beach is established as a tourist attraction. The black sand beach is famous for its chunks of washed-up glacial ice, which some have compared to diamonds due to their glistening appearance.

Booked the 4 day tour including the Golden Circle, South Coast, Volcano Hike, and Northern Lights in October of 2021. It's hard to imagine having had a better experience in Iceland. Our guide Auðbjörg (She said just call her Björg) was everything we could hope for in a tour guide. Completely knowledgeable about each and every stop we went, amazingly charismatic, friendly; she made what was already an unbelievable experience completely unforgettable. We started off getting picked up in downtown Reykjavik on day 1 in a very timely fashion and continued on to the Golden Circle. Björg timed each stop perfectly that we all had time to explore the beautiful landscapes and take plenty of photos. Never felt rushed or like we were wasting too much time at any one place. Pretty much everywhere in Iceland looks like it could be a postcard. We continued on along the South coast stopping at Skógafoss and a nice little vista that Björg knew of before settling in at Adventure Hotel Geirland near Kirkjubæjarklauster (For our ease she said just call it K-town). Hotel was nice and clean and remote enough that in the right conditions the aurora would surely be visible. Dinner was tasty and no more expensive than anywhere else in Iceland.Day 2 we headed out for our glacier hike and ice cave tour. Due to gale force winds the glacier we were supposed to visit was inaccessible but Björg was able to arrange for us to visit a different glacier near Katla. Hiking on the glacier and going into the ice cave was like something out of Lord of the Rings. Gorgeous views in every direction. After about 2 or 3 hours on the glacier we stopped for lunch at Reynisfjara, the black sand beach. Got to explore the caves and made a separate stop for more views at Dyrhólaey. Last stop before our hotel again for dinner was perhaps my favorite of the whole trip, the canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur.Day 3 we were able to visit Jökulsárlón and the Diamond beach. We were lucky to have a gorgeous sunny day so we were able to stop at multiple little stops that I had never even heard of in my research of the island, but were just as amazing as the last. Favorite was probably a cave that looks just like Yoda from the inside near Hjörleifshöfði. Day 3 is a fair bit of travel back to Reykjavik but Björg made sure we were never on the bus for too long of stretch. Included a stop at Seljalandsfoss and Gljufrabui, which (rightfully) Björg admitted was her favorite waterfall. Got back to Reykjavik about 7:30 that evening.Day 4 was our volcano hike with unforgettable views of the Fagradalsfjall volcano and lava field. Hiked up a 250 meter path to see all of the lava field in its glory. Even got to walk down to the very edge of the lava field and see where it ended. After lunch, because again we were lucky to have sunny weather we stopped at a small hot spring and the beautiful Kleifarvatn lake. Got back to Reykjavik late afternoon and was able to grab dinner before our Northern Lights tour. We (again) were lucky and had perfectly clear skies and saw an amazing show about 45 mins outside of Reykjavik.I know I've rambled on too long during this review already but I can't stress enough how much I'd recommend this tour. Well worth the price. Small group as promised. I'm sure all of their guides are fantastic but I feel especially lucky to have had Björg.
Highly recommend our guide Nick from arctic adventures (originally from Scotland). He shared interesting Icelandic myths, stories and geographical facts about Iceland. He made our trip really enjoyable with good music that tops the charts and showed us amazing Icelandic waterfalls, beaches and geothermal areas. He is very good at driving too fantastic guide!
I am obsessed with this itinerary! My husband and I are planning a trip to Iceland this summer. We are going to rent a camper van and plan to spend 6 nights and 7 days driving the ring road. We will end our trip with 3 days at a hotel in downtown Reykjavik. I want to follow this itinerary pretty closely. I know you recommended these 60 stops for a 7 day trip. Would you mind breaking down the stops by day / where to camp or park at night 59ce067264
